Chapter 11
Ruth waited eagerly to miss her period. Sometimes she was sure it had taken and she was pregnant, sometimes she was sure it had failed. She could be elated one minute and despondent the next. She knew there was nothing she could do about it, but she was even stressed out about being stressed out, worrying it could somehow affect the embryos chances.
In the meantime, she stayed by Gronâs side. He didnât like her leaving the village anymore, so her life became a little more tedious and boring, but she didnât mind. It gave her more time to worry, but she knew she was doing penance for deceiving Gron the way she had. She hadnât had a choice, but if this was what he needed to feel better, she would do it.
Moira kept her company. When the men found them again after their little escape into the jungle, Kranu had eventually established that Moira was not hurt, but by then she was mad at him, so he decided he was mad at her too for going off by herself. For the rest of the day, Kranu had sulked off by himself somewhere while Moira fumed in the village, Troii staying close to keep an eye on her. They had made up by the next morning as far as Ruth could tell. Moira certainly seemed to have forgotten it and Kranu was back in the tribe, shadowing her as if nothing had ever changed. Ruth wondered at their fiery, capricious relationship that surely made Troiiâs head spin.
Ruth had no way of knowing when her period was meant to come. She didnât keep track of the days, just put a notch on a branch in their tree every time she had one to mark a month. She started putting notches with her little stone knife in a stick to mark the days. More than sixty and she would consider herself pregnant, she decided. She didnât want to wait that long, but she wanted to be sure. She could just be late, especially since the doctor had put an alien solution of some kind in her and then plugged her cervix, if only temporarily. She knew it was supposed to dissolve on its own, but Ruth had no idea when.
At night, Gron basically pinned her. He was not going to let her get away again. He even wrapped his tail around one of her limbs somewhere. After the first couple of nights, she began to argue, complaining softly and gently peeling his tail off her. She didnât want him to think she wanted to leave. She didnât want him to think that she was being kept there against her will. He seemed to make an effort to go back to how they were before, but she still woke up with his tail wrapped around her somewhere. She guessed it would just take time. She knew he was only doing it because he was afraid for her, afraid she would get lost or
